Choose an explicit comparison allowance
The tool asks for required total spare per compared dimension. If an opening is 10 inches wide and the oriented bin is 9.5 inches wide, the width difference is 0.5 inch. A required spare value of 0.25 inch passes that particular comparison.
The allowance is the total difference, not a quarter inch on every side. The software does not decide how the gap is distributed around the item. Its default is a fictional planning example and is not a manufacturer requirement.
Keep measurement uncertainty visible
If measurements are approximate, a tiny passing difference may not be meaningful in practice. Record how you obtained each value and recheck the real item before purchase. A decimal display does not make a tape measurement exact.
Setting spare to zero allows geometric equality. It does not promise that an item with no extra room can be handled comfortably, removed when packed or moved past a projection. The tool checks simple dimensional inequalities, not friction, grip or the actual insertion path.
Do not treat extra room as restraint
A loose fit does not make an object secure during travel, and a snug fit does not establish an approved restraint. Those decisions depend on the vehicle, equipment, contents and appropriate documentation. The calculator supplies no retention advice.
Use the result to narrow a shopping comparison, then make the necessary real-world checks. If the entire decision rests on a barely positive gap, consider whether a clearly smaller option would answer the organizational need with less uncertainty. No purchase is required to use this method.
